Comment // Taylor Swift slams Kanye West at the Grammy’s

Screen Shot 2016-02-21 at 15.50.37Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2016 Grammy’s was definitely memorable. To remind us what got us to this moment, let’s recap of the rocky relationship of the two stars:

If we think back to the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009, Kanye leapt onstage and interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech for winning Best Video with “You Belong With Me” and pipping Beyoncé’s Single Ladies video to the post. Kanye also recently included Taylor Swift within the lyrics of his new song, Famous. He writes, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b***h famous”. Kanye claims he had permission from Taylor to use the line within his song, however Taylor’s PR team dispute the claim.

Whether Kanye genuinely has something against Taylor Swift is debatable, many people are arguing that Kanye is merely trying to generate buzz around his new album, The Life of Pablo. If you ask me, bringing down a young female artist is not the way to do it.

Last week at the 2016 Grammy Awards, Taylor Swift broke the record as the first ever female to win ‘Album of the Year’ at the Grammy’s two years in a row! Taylor’s acceptance speech tackled the industries sexism and fired back at Kanye’s behaviour:

I want to say to all the young women out there: There are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there. And that will be the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you for this moment.
- Taylor Swift

I credit Taylor for her passion towards her music and her focus in not letting anyone else push her off track. We have all faced criticisms, but no one in this world is perfect. We should congratulate people on their achievements, rather than remind them of their failures. We should recognise that everyone has different tastes and opinions on what is good, what is bad, what is fashionable and what is cool. Just because you are different to someone, does not mean they deserve unpleasant comments towards them.
