Pop-Up Film Festival, Kino, comes to Leeds
A Finnish film, award winning shorts, flavoured vodkas, popcorn, a saw player! Just bring your woolly jumper!
Thurs 9 and Friday 10 February
A Pop-Up Film Festival called Kino with an Arctic film night and a programme of award winning shorts is taking place at Temple Works Leeds cultural venue in Holbeck.
The festival, called Kino, has been organised by Temple Works’ interns Maisie Roberts, a Leeds University graduate from Berlin, and Jenni Ervasti here on an Erasmus scheme from Finland.
The first night, Thursday 9 Feb, focuses on Arctic cinema and features Makku Tuurna’s emotionally charged film, Salla, Selling the Silence.
The evening will also feature flavoured vodkas, finnish pastries, hot chocolate and a saw player!
Intern and festival co-organiser Jenni said: ’I wanted to show something very Finnish for people to see and experience what life is like in the countryside away from the cities. This is something that you can’t find in the guidebooks.”
Also showing that night will be a surprise film from an award winning Canadian Inuit director, and music from The Yorkshire Musical Saw Player Charles Hindmarsh.
The second night, Friday 10 February, sees the Future Fresh Shorts programme, from the makers of Secret Cinema and includes six internationally acclaimed short films. It is a film festival that screens sporadically all around the world and from as far afield as Kabul.
The films on show include God Of Love, 2011 Oscar winner for Live Action Short Film, and The Eagleman Stag, Winner of the Best Short Animation at BAFTA. The night will also include music from Grant K Fennell, a local acoustic folk musician and Leeds University student.
Intern and festival co-organiser Maisie said: “This months Future Shorts programme showcases the best short films out there at the moment. All the films are award-winners so it is a great opportunity to experience the work of current leading filmmakers from all over the world.”
This night will include the special Kinopolitan cocktail, flavoured popcorn and music from Leeds University student Grant K Fennell.
Finally on Valentines Day there will be a special 1940s themed evening including a screening of the classic love story Brief Encounter with music, cakes, cocktails and a 20 per cent discount from the West Yorkshire Playhouse costume department on production of a ticket.
