L.O.L: Ladies of Leeds

Ying (Esther), 23 Postgraduate, Management
What is the best coffee place in Leeds?
I think… perhaps Costa? The environment there is so active and bright. I love it.
What event would you recommend for next week?
I won’t be in Leeds next week as I’m going to London but something I really like about Leeds is all the events and parties. I’m from China and we don’t really have that there.
Who do you find inspiring and why?
Someone who inspired me was my English teacher at university back in China, she was so kind and helpful to her students.

What is the best coffee place in Leeds?
I go to Balcony quite a lot, I guess that’s not very exciting but they do very nice chai lattes.
What event would you recommend for next week?
I think I’m going to Mood Swings at Beaver Works – they’ve got some good bands and I like dressing up so that should be fun.
Who do you find inspiring and why?
Hm… I don’t know. My mum is quite inspiring I guess…she had me when she was a teenager and brought me up on her own. She inspired me to work hard and go to university in order to get a good education.

What is the best coffee place in Leeds?
I’d recommend Mrs Athas or perhaps La Botega, La Botega is really good too.
What event would you recommend for next week?
Nothing really… I’ve just got work and uni… I don’t really go out much.
Who do you find inspiring and why?
Anyone? Mary Ellen Mark perhaps, she’s a great photographer. One of my greatest inspirations in a creative sense.

What is the best coffee place in Leeds?
Cielo is my favourite, it’s a small non-profit café. It’s really cool.
What event would you recommend for next week?
Nothing special I don’t think. Haven’t got anything planned but boring grown-up stuff but I’d recommend Brudnell Social Club, it’s really good and they’ve got cheap beer.
Who do you find inspiring and why?
There is a band called Slow Club that I really like. The singer, Rebecca Lucy Taylor, works with feminism and she is a very inspiring woman. She’s got a really nice Instagram called @selfesteemselfesteem, you should follow it. The band is from Sheffield and they play indie rock. I’m a gig photographer so that’s how I found out about them.

Claire, 21 Fourth year, French and English
What is the best coffee place in Leeds?
Oh my, that’s a big question. La Botega perhaps, or Café 164… I love Café 164 because it’s an art gallery as well as a café.
What event would you recommend for next week?
Brudnell Groove, definitely, it’s at Wire. It’s a non-profit based Leeds party and all the money goes to charity. I think the music this week will be Italian based and groovy.
Who do you find inspiring and why?
Frida Kahlo at the moment because I think she’s so bright. She experienced so much trouble in her life and now she’s such an idol. She’s the queen of the selfie as well.

Jess, 20 First year, Religion and Politics
What is the best coffee place in Leeds?
Bad question… I don’t like coffee but there is a place in Hyde Park called LS6 and they do a really nice veggie breakfast, I like it there.
What event would you recommend for next week?
I think I’m going to Jungle Jam next Friday. I’ve never been before, but I’ve heard it’s really fun.
Who do you find inspiring and why?
I’d say Beyoncé because I can’t think of anyone else. She’s amazing. She makes me feel good, and she’s a feminist and all. She’s just so cool.
